Of Minnesota’s many miles of hiking trails, one of the nicest may be the Dakota Rail Regional Trail. This paved trail stretches for 13 miles along the same route as the former Dakota Rail Corridor. With gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape, this abandoned railroad hike will take you on an incredible adventure.
The Dakota Rail Trail is the site of a former rail line that once ran through the area. The line was created in 1885.

Over the years, the line was sold several times. It was eventually purchased by Hennepin County. The abandoned railroad became a multi-use trail in 2009.

The trail is located in the western suburbs of the Twin Cities. It runs from Wayzata to St. Bonifacius.

An additional 12 miles extends from St. Bonifacious to Mayer in Carver County.

No matter which part of the trail you decide to hike, you’re in for an adventure. Hikers have a chance to see wildflowers and wetlands teeming with different bird species. In the fall, the trail blooms with amazing color.
