Charming small towns lay scattered like gems throughout the great state of Wyoming, and each one has something unique to offer. It would be difficult to pick the best one but, thankfully, you don’t have to. More than being the best town in the state, Upton, Wyoming, is the best town on Earth, and they have the sign to prove it. If you’re anywhere near the eastern side of the Cowboy State, you’ll want to stop in to check it out.

Upton has been known as the “Best Town on Earth” since it was founded in the early 1900s.

Home to approximately 1,100 people, the town is quaint while still providing the basic amenities most people look for: shopping, restaurants, schools… but if all you do is cruise a few of the city’s streets, you’ll probably miss out on the elements unique to Upton.

For one thing, Upton is the site of a historic Old Town. It’s one of the best-preserved pioneer towns in the state, complete with unpaved streets and buildings from the 1800s including the original Upton Jailhouse and a number of ranch buildings and homes.

You’ll want to spend some time in the Red Onion Museum, too. It’s overflowing with historical artifacts from the town’s and the state’s history.

If you happen to visit in the summer, right around mid-July, you can join the entire town at the gorgeous city park for Fun Days.

Naturally, being a Wyoming town, there are loads of outdoor activities to pass the time. In addition to hiking, camping, and wildlife watching, there are almost 50 reservoirs, lakes, creeks, and dams within a 10-mile radius of Upton. That means ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming.

Plus, Upton is near the Wyoming Black Hills Scenic Byway. It’s easy to lose yourself in the beauty of it all motoring along this 78-mile stretch of highway in the breathtaking Wyoming wilderness.
