To our great sadness, 2017 has been California’s worst wildfire season. So unfortunately, it isn’t a shock to many that we’re experiencing another tragic fire that’s intensely raging through Southern California. Engulfing the city of Ventura and surrounding areas, this is the latest wildfire to hit the Sunshine State, and here’s what you should know.

Now currently twice the size of Manhattan, the Ventura wildfires are proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

VCFD PIO/Twitter Beginning late on Monday night and early Tuesday morning, hundreds of firefighters started working hard to try and put out the Ventura wildfires. The Ventura County Fire Chief stated that the “prospects for containment are not good,” informing people of the destructive combination between the high winds and intensity of the fire.

So far, roughly 45,000 acres have burned, with beloved landmarks like the Two Trees of Ventura lost to the fires.

VCFD_PIO/Twitter Places like the Hawaiian Village Apartments in Ventura and more than 100 buildings have also been lost to the fire. Since the fires started raging late on Monday nearly 30,000 people have been evacuated from the area.

With local wind speeds reaching up to 50mph, the wildfires have continued to rage and have left 260,000 residents in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties without power.

VCFD_PIO/Twitter Because of how intensely the fire has continued to rage and the gusts of wind that are sweeping down into the city of Ventura, there’s no telling when these fires will be completely contained.

Sylmar Recreation Center at 13109 Borden Avenue. Sunland Senior Center at 8640 Fenwick Street. Large animal evacuations can head to Pierce College at 6201 Winnetka Avenue. Small animals can head to either the West Valley Shelter at 20655 Plummer Street or East Valley Shelter at 14409 Vanowen Street.
