If you’re a history buff, head to Cheyenne, Oklahoma, to the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site to explore the site of a historical battle that took place in the 1800s. There are outdoor attractions, an indoor museum, and self-guided trails around the grounds of this historical place.

Washita Battlefield National Historic Site is located at 18555 Hwy 47A in Cheyenne, along the Washita River. The museum is free to the public and is open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for select holidays.

The site marks the location of a surprise dawn attack that took place on the Cheyenne village of Peace Chief Black Kettle on November 27, 1868. Lt. Col. George A. Custer led the attack alongside the 7th U.S. Cavalry.

The Cheyenne suffered many casualties in the Battle of the Washitas. The military saw it as a notable victory toward diminishing Indian raids on frontier settlements.
