Union Market originally opened as Centre Market in 1871. It was located between the White House and the Capitol and was a thriving center of commerce. But it was torn down in 1931 so the city could build the National Archives.

The vendors moved themselves to an outdoor market called Union Terminal Market in 1931. In 1967, an indoor market was built and the revitalized Union Market thrives there today.
