Located in the Mount Rose Wilderness area of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest near Reno is the Hunter Creek Waterfall Trail—a hike that definitely belongs atop your Nevada bucket list. This 5.8-mile, heavily trafficked, moderate, out-and-back trail offers stunning views during its nearly 1,300-foot climb, a waterfall at the end, and is dog- and horse-friendly. Truly, this waterfall hike should not be missed!

Make sure you take hydration packs, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and wear comfortable yet sturdy hiking shoes. Also, keep an eye out for snakes and bears which have been seen from time to time.

There are a couple of rough patches such as this rock-covered area as well as two short but somewhat steep grades.

At about the two-mile mark, the landscape gives way to shady trees which are a welcome respite from the sun.

It’s a pretty mild hike; however, you do have to cross the creek a few times. At each juncture, there are wood planks or stepping stones (pictured.) Of course, you can traipse through the water if you want to. (Waterproof shoes would be a good idea.)

The waterfall is about 50 feet high and has a small pool at its base. This is a perfect place for a picnic as downed trees provide seating, and the shadows cast by tall trees make the area quite comfortable.

You can even climb to the top of the waterfall; however, pay heed to the signs. Sometimes this trail is closed.

The best time to take this amazing waterfall hike is between May and October; however, many people venture upon this trail all year long depending on the weather. Regulars to the area recommend starting early, especially in the summer, to avoid too much direct sun and to beat the rush.
