Discovering something new and marvelous in your own backyard is an amazing feeling. This hidden trail leads to a collection of ruins that are over a century old. Even better, you don’t need to be a particularly outdoorsy person to tackle this hike.
This hike through Tantiusques in Sturbridge is an easy and fun expedition to the archaeological remains of old mines.

The Nipmuc people once mined for graphite here. European settlers continued the practice and made Tantiusques one of New England’s first mining operations.

The loop trail itself is only 1.5 miles long, so it’s easily manageable for families or casual hikers.

It’s quiet and peaceful in the woods, but there’s plenty of wildlife to spot and rocks for kids to climb on.

At the beginning of the trail, there is an old mine shaft that you can peer into. Though not pictured, bars have been placed over the open shaft to prevent you toppling in. You’ll see more collapsed mines as you make your way down the trail.

You’ll also be able to make out mine cuts, ditches and tailing piles. Hikers can also check out the remains of a 1902 mining trench that was once several thousand feet long.

This trail is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. You’ll want to allow a minimum of one hour to explore.
