The forest is quiet and tranquil, and while exploring its trails, you may come across creeks, all draining into the Sheyenne River, and add to the scenic atmosphere.

The North Country National Scenic Trail goes through the forest on its way to Lake Sakakawea, the ending point for the trail that traverses the country all the way from New York. This trail in particular will bring you to North Dakota’s only natural waterfall, which is located in this forest.

This is definitely the kind of place that would make for the best kind of fall foliage excursion. Exploring the trees while they are going through the colorful transformations of the season is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
