New Mexico has 35 State Parks and they are all worthy of a visit, but if you are looking for a laidback day in nature that’s not too far away – and even has a lake – drop in at Oasis State Park in Portales.
Oasis State Park is set among cottonwood trees, shifting sand dunes, and a small fishing lake. Although fishing is the park’s main draw, it also has several hiking trails, a peaceful and shady campground, and an abundance of birds.

You will find this park beautifully maintained, with improved camping, complete with full restroom facilities and even showers.

Picnic (or bbq over a fire pit) or spend time watching the kids play under the shaded playground. There’s a group picnic shelter there too if you want to bring friends and family.

In an otherwise dry area, you will appreciate this man-made lake. More the size of a large pond, at about three acres, it’s stocked with rainbow trout during the colder season and catfish during the warmer months.

Park staff also puts on kid’s fishing clinics and hosts a Trout Derby in Spring. Don’t forget the annual Catfish Challenge either, when eager anglers attempt to hook the biggest catfish for prizes and fame.

Walk the lake’s perimeter along the paved path. If anything, stop by and watch the sunset over the water. Also, check the park calendar for moonlight hikes, kid’s flashlight hikes, and stargazing programs.
