Delawareans grow up eating seafood fresh off of the boat, locally raised chickens, and vegetables right from the garden. Why is it, then, that we’ve got such strange food tastes? These iconic Delaware dishes are favorites throughout the state, but to outsiders, they may seem just a little bit strange. When was the last time you ate something on the below list?

  1. The Bobbie

Facebook / Capriotti’s An entire thanksgiving meal, plus mayo, on a roll. Cold. You can’t beat it… the Gobbler from wawa has nothing on Delaware’s most famous sandwich.

  1. Scrapple and Egg Sandwiches

Facebook / Wilson’s General Store We don’t even want to know what’s in scrapple… but we’ll tell you it’s “everything but the oink”. Regardless, we’ll eat it extra crispy, with eggs, on toast.

  1. Deerhead Dogs

Foodspotting / Keith Kendall Deerhead dogs look soooo gross… but when you combine mustard, onions, and Deerhead’s secret sauce, something magical happens.

  1. Muskrat

Facebook / Southern Grill of Ellendale Yes, there are still a few places in Sussex County with muskrat on the menu. Southern Grille of Ellendale is probably the most famous of these rural restaurants serving up this Delaware tradition.

  1. Slippery Dumplings

  1. Squid Ink Pasta

  1. Goulash

Flickr / Goulash Of course, Goulash is found in plenty of places, but you know you’re at a Delaware party when someone makes this dish for the crowd. Spaghetti sauce, pasta and ground beef combine to make an interesting meal.

What’s your favorite iconic Delaware food? Personally… I’ll skip the strange stuff and stick to our best Boardwalk foods. Particularly when it’s the middle of Winter…I’m really missing out on Thrasher’s fries, Gus and Gus fried chicken, and the other Boardwalk staples.
