There’s no dish more classically American than the burger, and the search for the world’s best burger can often be seen as taking a lifetime. But today, you’re in luck, since we’re sharing where to find the world’s best burger — as decided by the popular Swedish television show Varldens Basta Burgare, that is. Oh, and did we mention that this little-known burger restaurant is also super hero themed? Seriously, you’re going to want to visit as soon as possible.

This is Burgers and Things, an off the beaten path Honolulu eatery with a cult-like following, an unassuming exterior, mouthwatering burgers, and a unique comic-book theme sure to bring out everyone’s inner geek.

Nestled under a freeway ramp and situated on the ground floor of a residential building, Burgers and Things might just be Pauoa’s best-kept secret.

This casual and cozy bare bones, counter serve burger joint offers limited seating and is basically a museum of geekery. You’ll find framed comic books on the wall, a collection of superhero aprons for the staff, a bin of geeky toys, a vase of selfie photo props a la classic Batman onomatopoeia (Pow! Bam!), and the Star Wars film score coming through the speakers. It’s a must visit for any Honolulu geek.

The eatery serves up a variety of imaginative braised burgers and sandwiches sure to make your mouth water — including a kimchee burger with swiss cheese and this decadent burger topped with macaroni and cheese.

Burgers are braised rather than grilled, making for a patty that is both well-done and juicy. Oh, and the umami-packed jus the patties are cooked in will certainly make you a regular of this small-joint.

Be warned, though: they stopped taking orders over the phone since they are so busy. Instead, you’ll have to walk in and order a burger for lunch or an early dinner: they’re only open until 6 p.m., after all.
