The best way to experience North Dakota’s diverse wildlife is by heading outdoors to see it in person. The best way to do that is often by visiting one of the state’s many, many wildlife refuges. The Peace Garden State has more wildlife refuges than any other state in the country, many of which you can visit yourself. This one in particular is perfect for a family day trip to head out and enjoy the beauty of NoDak nature – and here’s why:
The Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge is a park located in the southeast part of North Dakota near the town of Cayuga.

The refuge is located right along Lake Tewaukon, a beautiful spot that will easily make you fall in love.

When visiting here, you can expected to see hundreds of animals - namely, waterfowl. While this is already impressive, if you wait until just the right time you can experience something you will never forget.

During certain times of the year you can experience something that is almost out of this world. During migration seasons, hundreds of thousands of birds (like snow geese) flock here on their journeys to and from breeding grounds. This is a sight that is almost unbelievable.

Many other animals can be spotted here throughout the year, making it a great place to go to walk the trails, fish, or otherwise enjoy. Bald eagles, owls, falcons, and hawks, for example, are often seen at Tewaukon.

Deer, coyotes, fox, mink, beavers, and badgers are a handful of the many other creatures who call this place home and are quite often spotted by visitors.

Not to mention a North Dakota favorite - ring-necked pheasants! There is also the chance of seeing rare creatures such as whooping cranes travel through here.

The Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge is located 5 miles south of Cayuga, North Dakota on County Road 12. The refuge has an auto tour road to drive through, an overlook to get a fantastic view, and hiking trails to experience it on foot.
