Royalston is a tiny town surrounded by wildlife management areas and forests. Although it’s only about 76 miles from Boston, the pastoral setting makes the town feel much more remote. One of the main draws is Doane’s Falls, a waterfall on Lawrence Brook that drops a total of 175 feet across several sections of plunges.

This route is part of the longer Tully Trail, a 22-mile long loop that encircles Royalston. Here’s the trail map.
The Trustees Of course, you don’t have to complete the whole circuit to view some of the prettiest places in Massachusetts. After visiting Doane’s Falls, continue north to Spirit Falls and Jacobs Hill. This portion of the trail offers soothing scenery for hikers.
Should you wish to continue your trek, head further along the trail to Royalston Falls.
Tripadvisor/Nina P You can cheat and travel by car, as Royalston Falls lies a short distance - roughly 1.5 miles round trip - off Athol-Richmond Road. Be aware that taking the alternative approach along Falls Road involves dirt roads and bumpy conditions.
If you’d rather be on the water than beside it, visit Coddings Meadow or Tully Lake, a 200-acre lake that’s great for kayaking or fishing (as always, you need a fishing license).
