The Desert of Maine actually started out as a family farm.

It was owned by the Tuttle family who moved to the 300 acre farm in 1797.

They successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years before things went hayWIRE.

They spent years basking in the success of the land, without rotating the crops.

And sheep were allowed to overgraze the area.
