When you think of Minnesota’s most beautiful lake, a few options probably come to mind. Is it Lake Superior, for its vast size and incredible rock formations? Is it Rainy Lake, with its thousands of islands? Or is it the lake that hosts your family cabin? There are as many valid answers as there are lakes in Minnesota, but we know of one that is particularly beautiful in the fall. This hikable lake is the perfect spot to watch the leaves change this fall.

As Minnesota’s first state park, Itasca State Park is a popular place to visit throughout the year. It is most known, of course, for Lake Itasca.

This small glacial lake would be unremarkable were it not for the fact that it is where the Mississippi River begins. A walk across the river’s headwaters at Lake Itasca is practically a rite of passage for Minnesotans.

The park is also known for being very beautiful. Visit in the fall, and Itasca Staet Park will be awash with color from the moment you arrive.

Many types of trees grow in the park. It is known for its old-growth pine trees, but many varieties of deciduous trees grow there as well.

You will see many of those trees on your hike along the Dr. Roberts Trail. This 1.9-mile trail passes through a forest which, in the fall, is absolutely breathtaking.

The hike will lead you alongside the southwestern shores of Lake Itasca. The sight of the clear water reflecting the colorful trees is stunning.

If you can tear your eyes away from Lake Itasca, the trail also follows the shore of the much smaller Lyendecker Lake.

If you’re lucky, you’ll even see some critters scampering through the trees.

There are many other easy trails in Itasca State Park as well. The more you explore the park, the more autumn beauty you will discover.

Itasca State Park is in Park Rapids, Minnesota, about 30 miles south of Bemidji. The area is nearing its peak color, so now is a great time to go!
