In the late 1800s, John B. Willig build a small cottage on Magazine Street and leased the building to a young man named Frank W. Mackie.
La Petitie Grocery/Facebook Together, they opened up the Central Tea, Coffee & Butter Depot which was wonderfully successful.
Unfortunately, in May 1908, a fire broke out in the city that burned the store to the ground.

The new building was better than ever, and unlike anything else on the block.
La Petitie Grocery/Facebook It had a full service grocery store and and a barn in the back with horses, and stable hands that would help with delivery charges.
The store was renamed “Frank W. Mackie Grocer” and remained the go-to place for tea, coffee, butter, and other groceries.

After Frank Mackie passed away in 1942, his youngest son took over for a while before selling the business to Frank A. Von Der Haar. Von Der Haar’s Fine Foods operated for nearly 40 years before closing down in 1982.
After Von Der Haar’s Fine Foods closed town, Irwin’s Flowers took over and provided the neighborhood with fresh floral arrangements for almost twenty years.

In March 2004, La Petite Grocery opened, the name is a nod to the history of the building and the original store that operated here.
