Delaware’s one of the most haunted states in the country, and it’s no surprise! Due to our long history, plenty of ghosts make their homes in the First State. One of the best ghost stories is the tale of Woodburn, the Governor’s house, where ghosts openly roam.

The state of Delaware has owned the Woodburn estate since 1965, when they purchased it for the Governor’s residence.

Woodburn has been reported as haunted since shortly after it was opened.

The dining room is the most haunted room of the house, and the ghosts’ actions are a bit puzzling.

Delaware Governor’s House Instead of breaking things, moving objects, or haunting dreams, the ghosts of Woodburn have a different medium through which they communicate. They appear dressed in colonial-era clothing, helping themselves to the best spirits in the house.

Governor Charles Terry Jr. lived in the mansion and reported seeing a ghost helping itself to vintage wines.

Delaware Governor’s House Another owner of Woodburn reported that every night, his wine decanter would empty, despite filling it before bed. These wine-loving ghosts appear to be friendly… if not a little drunk.

The mansion’s garden is reported to be haunted, too.
