New Mexico is filled with some incredible natural beauty and we think the best way to truly experience all the state has to offer is by hiking! You’ll find plenty of trails throughout the state, whether you’re looking for a hike that is long, short, a real workout, or something easy enough for the whole family to enjoy. Either way, you’ll encounter some beautiful views along the way.

However, if you’re up for a real challenge, then you may want to take note of one New Mexico hiking trail that spans the entire state.

We’re talking about the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, an epic hiking trail that runs through five states and spans more than 3,100 miles between Mexico and Canada. New Mexico’s portion of the trail is an estimated 775 miles.

The New Mexico portion of the trail winds its way through the western side of the state from the U.S.-Mexico border up north following the Continental Divide to the southern portion of the Rocky Mountains.

…and the Chama River Wilderness, to name a few places.

However, don’t feel that you need to take months off from your everyday life just to hike the 775 miles. While you could have some exceptional experiences like the author of Wild in her memoir, this often takes four or so months for most thru-hikers. Instead, you can opt to spend a weekend or some vacation hours to complete one or more sections at your leisure.
