Now that the snow and cold seem to have set it, it’s truly winter in Wisconsin. And while that’s not always good news to everyone, it does mean that the state has turned into a gorgeous winter wonderland. The light fluffy snows of the past few days are sitting on branches and dusting housetops and basically make it look like we’re in the middle of a snow globe. It’s undeniably beautiful and warms even the coldest of hearts among these sub-zero temperatures.
Here are some of the towns, big and small, across the state, that look a little extra pretty when covered in snow:
- Minocqua
Facebook/MinocquaWinterPark All the forests up north sure lend themselves well to the snow and Minocqua is a charming town that doesn’t quite seem real even in the summer. In the winter, it’s easy to feel like you’ve been transported.
- Hayward
Facebook/ALureofLights Few spots embrace winter and the holidays like Hudson does. From their A Lure of Lights to the quaint downtown covered in snow, Hudson looks especially good in winter.
- La Farge
Facebook/KickapooValleyReserve It’s seriously difficult to be convinced that this isn’t straight out of a storybook — it looks too good to be true. The Kickapoo Valley provides a scenic backdrop.
- Mt. Horeb
Facebook/ScandihoovianFest Charming and fun all on it’s own, add in some snow and a whole lot of trolls and Mount Horeb looks exactly like the adorably kitschy type of thing you’d find in a souvenir snow globe.
- Eagle River
Flickr/Ken Mattison Vilas County has more lakes then we could ever count and all that water reflecting the snow is actually breathtaking. These are the kind of postcard-perfect images you can easily find in Eagle River.
- Sauk City
Flickr/Karen Bald Eagles winter along the Wisconsin River and they’re so much easier to pick out among the snow covered trees. The brilliant backdrop makes for a stunning foil to the majestic birds.
- Cedarburg
Flickr/JohnFehrenbach You’d be hard-pressed to find a cuter, more charming and quaint town in all the state. With their covered bridges, meandering stream, mills, specialty stores, winery and historic inns, there’s pretty much nothing Cedarburg doesn’t deliver on. In winter, it’s all extra beautiful and a bit unbelievable.
- Prairie du Chien
Facebook/Scott Smithson The Mighty Mississippi is either a bit more churning or docile as a mouse in winter, but it creates a lovely setting and makes Prairie du Chien one of my favorite winter spots.
- Madison
Flickr/RichardHurd Our state capital provides plenty of opportunity for picture perfect winter spots, from the Capital Building itself, to both lakes and their outdoor ice skating ponds.
- Bayfield
Flickr/MichaelJanke Another spot that’s dripping in charm no matter the season, but the more snow falls and Lake Superior freezes, the more otherworldly Bayfield looks.
- Delafield
Flickr/Michael Pereckas The Kettle Moraine State Forest is truly magical and you could totally imagine shaking up a snow globe and watching bits fall in a scene like this.
- La Crosse
Flickr/Lauren Rauk The giant bluffs and the Mississippi River provide a stunning backdrop for the beauty of winter in Wisconsin.
- Boulder Junction
Facebook/BoulderJunctionWI Anywhere in the Northwoods is going to provide a similarly beautiful spot, but I love big Boulder Lake and how still this area seems in winter.
- Ellison Bay
Facebook Door County is picture perfect most times, but the way Ellison Bay freezes up like there are just ice cubes in a drink is one of my favorite things. Add in some stellar sunrises and you can absolutely picture this scene in a snow globe on a shelf.
