Millions of bison once roamed the Great Plains, but they were almost driven to extinction. Tatanka: Story of the Bison is an amazing attraction that tells you about the history of one of South Dakota’s most beloved creatures. You’ve got to check this place out!

Tatanka: Story of the Bison is located at 100 Tatanka Drive in Deadwood. It includes an interpretive center and outdoor exhibits. Plan on visiting for about an hour to see everything.

Inside the interpretive center, you’ll find exhibits about the history of the bison and Native Americans that once lived on the plains here. Owner Kevin Costner also displays many of the costumes from Dances With Wolves.

As many as 60 million bison once roamed the prairie here. White hunters slaughtered millions of bison for just a few select parts of the animals, leaving their carcasses to rot in the sun. By 1900 there were just 1,000 left.
