If you’re up for a thrill in eastern Nebraska, this bridge walk is quite the adventure. The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is the first ever pedestrian bridge to connect two states (Nebraska and Iowa), and its route right over the Missouri River is absolutely stunning.

The bridge officially opened to foot traffic in 2008. On the Nebraska side, a three-acre playground and public space sits at the bridge’s entrance. If you’re afraid of heights, you might want to stay here and enjoy the bridge from the ground.

If you’re keen for an adventure, set off across the 3,000-foot walk in the sky. It’s hard to describe the feeling of walking above the Mighty Mo, watching boats go by under your feet.

It gets windy up here on the bridge, and the suspension cables will dance and sing when the wind is particularly strong. It can be just a little nerve-wracking if you’re nervous about the walk above the river.

Rest assured that the bridge is completely safe. Scores of people have passed over this span, and the structure has always been solid and secure.

One of the funnest parts of this walk is standing in two states at once. Obviously you’ll want to spend most of your time on the Nebraska side, but you can get a neat picture of yourself standing in both Nebraska and Iowa, far above the icy waters of the Missouri River.

If you want to continue your walk, the bridge connects to more than 150 miles of walking trails. You can even bike over the bridge and then keep on riding for ages.
