St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church is one of the many beautiful churches in the historic town of Virginia City. The 19th century church is absolutely stunning and has a unique history that goes along with its beautiful exterior.

The church was originally constructed in 1868 by Father Patrick Manogue. The church is often referred to as “the Mother of all Catholic churches in Nevada” and was an extremely prominent church from when it was first built to this very day.

The church was extremely popular when it first opened. At the time, thousands of Irish immigrants were arriving in Virginia City and in turn created a high demand for Catholic churches in the small town.

The church looks a lot different from when it was first constructed. Originally, the Gothic interior was much more ornate. However, the Great Fire of 1875 destroyed much of the original structure. The church was rebuilt but suffered neglect as Virginia City’s population dwindled in the late 1890s.

St. Mary suffered even more destruction in the 1950s when a group of “mad monks” took over management and stripped the church of many of its decorations, calling them “too worldly”.

Work to restore this beautiful church didn’t begin until 2009. Presently, the church is open everyday to visitors who wish to see this incredible building. Tours are free and the church even contains a museum and a wine cellar.
