Just over 800 people call the historic town, which got its start back in the late 1790s, home. The town earned its moniker from the prominent role it played in the salt industry from its inception until the tail end of the 1800s.

The credit for the discovery of salt in the small town goes to one woman, known simply as Mrs. Deemer. Back in the late 1800s, Mrs. Deemer noticed that once boiling water from a nearby spring evaporated, it left a salt residue. That led to the birth of a new industry.

The water also plays a prominent role in Saltsburg’s history. The Conemaugh River and Loyalhanna Creek merge together to create the Kiskiminetas River in the town.
Flickr/hhm8 Every June the town celebrates its history with Historic Saltsburg Canal Days. Held at Canal Park, the popular festival features a parade, live entertainment, food and vendor booths, and games.
Pennsylvania Main Line Canal line, a 100 mile waterway that joined Pittsburgh with Johnstown, ran right through Saltsburg for three decades. The railroad replaced the canal as the primary mode of transportation in 1882.

Today, townspeople and visitors flock to Saltsburg for its plethora of outdoor activities. The West Penn Trail runs from Saltsburg to Blairsville. Kayaking, boating, and fishing are popular activities at Loyalhanna Lake (pictured below).
