Texas is home to many charming small towns, many of which offer a hefty dose of peace and quiet. There’s nothing more delightful than a friendly, close-knit community with a rich history, and there’s one such spot here in Texas that perfectly captures the joy and beauty of our state. In fact, it just might be the most peaceful town in all of Texas – and you simply have to visit.

Salado became an incorporated town in 1867 in order to build a bridge across Salado Creek. At the time, the population was a mere 900, and there were seven churches, 14 stores, two hotels, two blacksmiths, and three cotton gins.

The already small population began to dwindle after railroads were built to the north and south of Salado. It was down to 400 by 1914 and just 200 by 1950. Today, there are just over 2,000 people living in the town.

19 different places in Salado are listed on the National Register of Historical Places, including the George Washington Baines House and several others. Salado Creek was also the very first certified Texas Natural Landmark.

W.A. Pace Memorial Park provides access to the creek for tubing and swimming. It’s also full of history - wagon wheel tracks from the Chisholm Trail days can still be seen in the limestone creek bed. Across the street is the famous Tablerock, in which lovers used to carve their names in the stone.

Today, there’s so much to see and do in Salado. Much of its rich history has been preserved, so you’ll feel like you’re in a museum while simply taking a stroll through downtown.

There are tons of shops, including antique stores and a 5000 square foot boutique selling everything from clothing to gourmet food. Delicious restaurants, art galleries, wineries, and breweries can all be found here - many within walking distance of one another! Ah, the joys of small town life.
