Nestled out in the pond-spotted landscape of southeastern North Dakota’s prairie pothole region is a charming small town that has made the world record books. This little town is in the perfect setting for anyone to relax and escape to the rolling hills of the plains. That, or they can take advantage of the fantastic hunting opportunities in the area and enjoy themselves. Regardless the reason for the visit, this hidden gem is the perfect place to experience the Peace Garden State’s prairie and here’s why:

The town we are talking about is the “Pride of the Prairie,” Rutland, North Dakota. When you enter the town, you’ll notice this sign. The big claim made on the sign is true: Rutland is the site where the once-World’s Largest Hamburger was made. The massive grill it was made on is still here.

This is a picture perfect North Dakota small town, aside from said hamburger making capabilities. It was founded in 1887.

It may not be very big, but visiting it is a treat, especially when you can go just outside of town to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the prairie.

Rutland is surrounded by “prairie pothole” region, or the Coteau des Prairies, which is dotted with hundreds of ponds and lakes. This area has some of the best waterfowl and bird hunting in the country. Rutland is right next to the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge.
