We’ve established that Northern California is full of tiny towns you didn’t even know existed. However, the town featured here is more than just your average small town. This town will make you feel like you’ve transported centuries back in time. There’s a lot to love about this quiet town. The fact that it looks like it hasn’t changed much since the Wild West days is all part of its charm!
Port Costa is a tiny town of only 190 people in Contra Costa County, about a 40 minute drive from San Francisco. The small town was founded in 1879 and was used mainly as a stop on the transcontinental railroad.

You’ll be amazed at Port Costa’s stunning landscape. It is completely surrounded by rolling hills and the gorgeous Carquinez Strait glistens in the background.

But the town isn’t just characterized by its beautiful setting. The main street (only about a half-block long) is lined with original buildings from the late 1800s. Even the Post Office hasn’t been upgraded from its original look.

Admittedly, not a lot goes on here. But that’s what makes Port Costa such an awesome getaway. There’s something extremely romantic about this quiet town which boasts Victorian decor along with its small town charm.

By far the main attraction of the town is The Burlington Hotel. The hotel has made a name for itself as being one of the oldest running hotels in California since it first opened in 1883.

The Burlington is easy to spot. The huge, fading yellow building is just bursting with charm. The interior is just as delightful and is comprised of a unique character that isn’t easily found nowadays, especially in hotels.

Port Costa’s second biggest attraction is The Warehouse Cafe which will really make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. This legendary bar is a popular spot for locals on the weekends for its huge beer selection and…interesting interior.

You’ll understand once you step inside. The entire bar is decked out in kitschy decor, including all kinds of taxidermy animals. There’s even a huge stuffed polar bear which looms over you as you sip on your cold beverage.

The garish decor is all part of the Warehouse’s allure. It’s not often you come across a bar like this anymore. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget.

Port Costa makes a wonderful day trip if you’re in the area. Despite a small population, this sleepy town has a lot to offer. As you find yourself walking down its story-filled streets, you can’t help but feel as if Port Costa exists in a world of its own.
