While strolling through the streets of New York City, it’s nearly impossible to turn your head without seeing a historic building within your line of view. Even if you aren’t from the Empire State, it’s almost certain that you’re familiar with iconic structures like the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty. With that said, there are still some lesser-known historic gems that you should get acquainted with.

The firehouse has long been a part of the area’s local history. It was declared a New York City landmark in 1996 and included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 - the same year the fire department left the building for good.

In recent years, visitors of New York City have been able to learn about the history of Engine Company 31 through local walking tours, which gives them a peek from the street’s sidewalks. But coming later this spring, people of the Big Apple will be able to not only go inside the firehouse… but also dance inside too!

Open every Friday and Saturday night for the month of May, the Bring Down The Walls multi-part public art project will involve more than 100 people and organizations to bring this all together.

Free and open to the public, the dance club’s full schedule and list of participants will be revealed later this spring as the month of May approaches. During the day the firehouse will operate as usual, hosting workshops, classes and community discussions, while at night the firehouse will be filled with electronic musicians and DJs.
