Every West Virginian knows that we live in a state with some of the most beautiful natural scenery in America. When a person thinks of West Virginia, it usually conjures images of rolling hills and mountains carpeted with lush foliage as far as the eye can see. One thing this state is not necessarily known for is its bodies of water (aside from the Mighty Ohio, of course). Nor is our water particularly blue. Except for this one lake in Grant County. Not only is it vibrantly blue, but it also might be the most unique lake you will ever visit.

If you plan to visit this gorgeous lake, head towards Abrams Creek Campground and Retreat. There, you can find cabins, lodges and campsites to stay at while you enjoy your visit.

Mount Storm Lake is a thermal reservoir just 10 miles from Abrams Creek. The Mount Storm Power Plant sits along the far bank of the lake and heats the waters 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. This makes it a popular destination in the cooler months, as the lake’s temperature rarely drops below 50 degrees, even in the winter.

The lake actually serves as a cooling pond for the power plant, which draws in massive amounts of the water to cool its turbines, ejecting the warmed water back into the lake. It uses so much water that the entire volume of the lake is recycled every 60 hours.

The water is clean and clear, allowing the lake to sparkle bright blue. It’s a great spot to go swimming, kayaking, sailing and jet skiing. With a depth of 160 feet, it is also a popular spot for scuba divers.

Even though a coal burning power plant sits nearby, the air is not contaminated - in fact the power plant actually exceeds all federal clean air regulations, so you can enjoy a swim or other activity without concern. There is also a forest trail to explore with informal camping and picnic spots along the shore.

When you are not spending time at the lake, Abrams Creek offers more activities to easily fill a weekend (or longer, if you choose). The resort’s namesake creek has many falls and cascades. There are also hiking trails to follow through lush and majestic woods, including a hemlock forest. You can also go tubing, swimming, wading and snorkeling. And if that isn’t enough for you, there are roughly two dozen nearby attractions to check out.
