Idaho is full of both aboveground and underground caves that are perfect for exploring. Most people have heard of a few of them, including the Mammoth Cave and the caves at Craters of the Moon. However, few people seem to know about the Kuna Caves. The cave is well-known among locals but since it is relatively small and hidden from public view it seems that a lot of Idahoans aren’t aware of its existence. If you’ve been craving a little adventure to kick off the warmer weather we’ve been having, you’ll definitely want to check out this amazing hidden cave.
Located right outside of Kuna, the Kuna Caves can be found smack dab in the middle of a vast area of nothingness and farmland. The cave is quite literally a hole in the ground in the middle of a field.

You’ll find it on Kuna Cave Road, off of Black Cat Road. The cave is located on public BLM land. The road to the cave is not paved, but it is easily accessible by car.

There are no signs or anything marking a grand entrance to the cave. You’ll simply see the top of a steel encaged ladder declining down into the abyss of the cave.

The ladder reaches down about 50 feet before reaching the cave’s floor. Once you make it down the ladder, you’ll see that the cave is quite long. It runs about a quarter mile northern and approximately 1,000 feet south from the entrance.

The cave is technically considered to be an underground lava tube. Although it is referred to as Kuna Caves, it is a single cave system. Locals say the cave system used to be much larger and contained multiple caves, but a portion of it was blocked off and collapsed.

Unfortunately, the cave has become victim to tons of graffiti, but it’s still a really neat place to hang out and take a few pictures. Be sure to dress warm, because the cave maintains a cool temperature of 56 degrees all year long.
