Maryland is surprisingly abundant with old ruins. In fact, you can find some of the best ruin hikes in a previous article here. Today we’re featuring one of the strangest looking spots in the state. Although it’s located in one of Maryland’s most well-known parks, not many people know that this secret abandoned spot exists. Read on to learn more.
On the edge of Patapsco Valley State Park in Ilchester, you can find the ruins of St. Mary’s College. This spot was once a seminary for young men training to be priests and dated all the way back to 1862.

Decades later, the building had several purchasers but nothing ever came of the property. After being burned by arsonists and becoming a hangout spot for vandals and curious teenagers, the structure was finally demolished in 2006.

You can still explore this place, as several structures remain. You know you’re getting close when you see crumbling staircases among nature.

The most prominent and fascinating feature left behind is the altar. At one time, a giant metal cross hung from this spooky spot, adding an even more mysterious vibe.

Several rumors float around about the altar, which has been dubbed by locals as the Hell House Altar. Some say it’s the place of animal sacrifices and that demons have been drawn upon the property.
