Delaware’s state parks are stunning year round, and they’re all very accessible to the public! No worries about giant mountains or dangerous wildlife in this state. One of my favorite fall activities is hiking Lums Pond, Delaware’s largest freshwater pond that’s surrounded by breathtaking scenery and painted with the brilliant colors of fall.

While the boating season is coming to an end, there are still many, many reasons to visit this incredible pond in Delaware.

Lums Pond’s hayrides are a great way to see the park’s fall colors. They run Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through November 5th, departing at 5 and 6 pm, with a 7pm ride on Saturdays. Each hayride is followed by a pondside bonfire!

I prefer to hike the pond! Hiking Lums Pond is easy for anyone. Nearly 15 miles of trails surround the pond and take you through the towering forest, providing you with breathtaking foliage views.

Parts of the trail cross over the pond on raised boardwalks, giving you a great chance to observe wildlife and catch a unique view.

So, what are you waiting for? Plan a fall day trip to Lums Pond while the leaves are changing. This is the perfect place for a fall hike in Delaware, and a great spot to get fall photos.

Of course, you can camp here in the fall… but I should disclose that the woods behind the pond are rumored to be haunted, and this might be the creepiest place in Delaware to pitch a tent.
