Washington is a state full of innovators, entrepreneurs and other brainiacs, and they live all over the state. You’ll find intelligent Washingtonians in every county. But according to data from Zippia, whose team crunched numbers to find the Evergreen State’s brightest cities, these 10 places seem to have the biggest groups of people with high IQs.
- Ridgefield
Jeff Silverstein / Wikipedia This small city of less than 5,000 people is located in the rolling hills of northern Clark County, and the high school dropout rate here is virtually non-existent. No wonder they have so many smarties.
- Mercer Island
SounderBruce / Flickr This Seattle suburb also has such a minuscule dropout rate that it doesn’t even register. Only 1.9% of its 23,000 people who live here don’t have, at minimum, a high school diploma.
- Issaquah
Visit Issaquah Facebook Issaquah basically tied with Mercer Island in numbers, earning the number 3 spot on the list of smart cities in Washington. Not only is it full of educated people, but it’s a beautiful place to visit (or live).
- Sammamish
Bill Devlin / Flickr Set on the beautiful Lake Sammamish in King County, this city of almost 50,000 people defies the stereotype that bigger cities have bad schools. Their high school dropout rate is only 0.3%.
- Dupont
Michael & Sherry Martin / Flickr With a non-existent dropout rate and super-smart residents, it’s safe to say this small town is doing big things.
- Pullman
Robert Ashworth / Flickr You may want to keep your jokes about WSU and the Cougars to yourself. Only 3% of Pullman residents don’t have a diploma, and in fact, many of them are educators.
- Port Townsend
Stew and Vee Carrington / Flickr As if our charming Victorian village wasn’t cool enough already, it also happens to be home to some of Washington’s brightest. Only 3.4% of PT residents don’t have a diploma, and their high school dropout rate is basically 0%.
- Mill Creek
Wikipedia The city of Mill Creek earns the 8th spot on the list for its educated population and low high school dropout rate (almost 0%).
- Woodinville
Visit Woondinville Facebook Not only is Woodinville a gorgeous city with an abundance of amazing wineries, it’s the 9th smartest city in Washington. Of the 11,200 residents, only 3.7% are without a diploma.
- Mukilteo
Michael & Sherry Martin / Flickr Close to 21,000 people call Mukilteo home, and all but 2.5% of them have at least a high school diploma.
Of course, formal education isn’t always the best indicator of intelligence — but statistically, that’s how our smartest cities were measured. You’ll find smart people all over our beautiful state, and that’s one of many reasons why Washington is the best place to live.
