People who want to ski big usually come to Wyoming to hit the slopes at well-known ski areas such as Jackson Hole, Snow King, or Sleeping Giant. However, we have more to offer skiers than the hills everyone knows about. In fact, there’s a smashing ski area just up the road a piece from one of the more glamorous Wyoming resorts, and it was named one of the most underrated ski resorts in America.

If you’re looking for a ski resort off the beaten path, but one that is still challenging and fun, the Teton Mountain Range in Wyoming is where you’ll find it.

No, we’re not talking about the popular neighbor near Grand Teton National Park. This is Grand Targhee Resort, on the west side of the famed mountain range.

Located near tiny Alta, Grand Targhee is about as far west you can go and still be in Wyoming, and if there ever was a perfect spot for a ski resort, Targhee is in it.

That’s because, sitting on the western face of the Tetons, it catches the most marvelous powder from those eastern-moving snow storms.

JeremyG33TripAdvisor The average snowfall at the resort each year is over 500 inches. It’s not unusual for Targhee to get a foot or more of snow when there’s not even a dusting of powder on the Jackson side of the range.

There are nearly 100 trails to ski on the over 2,600 acres that make up Grand Targhee Resort.

You can take advantage of the five chairlifts to get you to most of the trails, and there’s a conveyor lift, too.

If you want to experience a run that few others take, strap your skis to your back and hike up to Mary’s Nipple. The elevation is 9,920 feet, and the only way to get to the summit is on foot.

The terrain at Grand Targhee is incredible. There are a few trails that are appropriate for beginners (about 10 percent), but the majority are for more advanced skiers.

One of the best things about this underrated ski resort is that, once you’re done skiing, there is still a lot to do.

Capta1990/TripAdvisor The base village is a luxury resort that boasts a spa, retail shops, restaurants, and, of course, a hotel.

There’s always something going on at Targhee from competitive events to live music…

…to festivals and special holiday parties.

Julia P/TripAdvisor The Torch Light Parade coming down the mountain at night is something you have to experience at least once in your lifetime.

There may be other resorts that get a lot more attention, but it’s not quite as crowded, and the skiing and apres ski activities at Grand Targhee are a nice change of pace.
