Been longing for a tropical getaway? Good news – you don’t have to go any farther than Wyoming!

If vast high plains and stunning Alpine forests come to mind when you think of the Cowboy State, you might be surprised to learn that it’s also home to the western tropics. Lake Hattie near Laramie boasts golden sandy shores, a gorgeous green-blue lake, and mountain vistas that make you do a double-take. Are you on a Hawaiian Island or in Wyoming?

It’s not as sultry and humid as the tropics and, upon closer inspection, those obviously aren’t the mountains of Kaui in the background, but there’s no denying the exotic beauty of Lake Hattie.

Wyoming definitely has a beauty all its own, but the splendor of Lake Hattie is defined in its uniqueness - everything from the picture-perfect lake to the color of the sky sets this lake apart from the rest.

There may not be palm trees or birds of paradise, but the wildflowers and other native flora play along, helping to set the mood for an island adventure.

There are several lakes in the area, but the largest of all the Laramie Plains Lakes is Lake Hattie. It’s a terrific place to enjoy typical water sports such as fishing, swimming, windsurfing, and boating. There’s even a handy ramp and dock right off the beach.

Possibly the best part about Lake Hattie is the free camping. That’s right - just pitch a tent or pull your trailer right on the beach…
