Indiana is full of historic buildings that have been partially refinished to house new businesses while keeping the original architecture intact. This jailhouse restaurant, for instance, not only serves up incredible food, it also offer tours of former jail cells. Likewise, there’s a bustling little restaurant hiding in Richmond that used to be a firehouse…and you’re going to want to visit.

There’s a Civil War-era historic building in Richmond that once served as the city’s local firehouse for roughly 70 years. Now, this converted firehouse is home to Richmond Firehouse BBQ & Blues, one of the finest dining establishments in this eastern Indiana city.

The firehouse ceased operations in the 1930s, but it wasn’t until 2012 when this building opened its doors as a BBQ restaurant. It’s owned by two city firefighters, as well, making the theme even more fitting.

The firehouse concept continues inside of the restaurant, leaving little room for visitors to question the restaurant’s theme. Murals and memorabilia, including badges, actual firemen uniforms, and other nostalgic items line the interior walls of this unique restaurant.

Of course, as the name suggests, there are two parts to this theme: firehouse and blues. You’ll also find incredible blues historical items and photographs lining the walls, combining the two parts of this restaurant’s overall concept.

There’s even a stage for live blues music with an incredible mural depicting a historic firefighting scene from Richmond’s past. There are so many pieces of history to explore here, you’ll need to visit more than once to check them all out.

As a BBQ restaurant, there’s little doubt about what you should order, though the menu extends far beyond BBQ. All of their BBQ food items are hickory smoked on site. Enjoy ribs, brisket, pulled pork, or BBQ nachos, with classic sides like mac and cheese, coleslaw, chili, cheesy potatoes, and more.

You’ll also find non-BBQ selections like tacos, pizza, chili dogs, salads, soups, and more. They even have incredible homemade pies for dessert.

In warmer weather, enjoy food and drinks outdoor on their scenic back porch while taking in the sights of historic Richmond.
