This restaurant in Milwaukee’s Historic Walker’s Point neighborhood keeps the history of the city alive because it’s located in one of the oldest firehouses around. Engine Company No. 3 isn’t just a restaurant, it’s also one of Milwaukee’s oldest fire stations!

This wasn’t the first firehouse on 6th and National.
Engine Company No. 3/Facebook Before the building you see today existed, there was a different firehouse that was built in 1869. In 1901, the firehouse you see today was constructed and included a large tower which is now no more. Though it’s been drastically changed, much of the old firehouse can be seen in the architecture. The house was home to many notable firefighters, including driver Leonard Limberger, who assisted in finding the pyromaniac Matthew Thomet who admitted to starting many fires such as the Stadt Theater fire.
One Milwaukee restaurateur had big plans for the firehouse.
Engine Company No. 3/Facebook Peter Sandroni, a known Milwaukee restaurant owner, had his eye on the building because it was so close to his other restaurant, La Merenda, which is located two blocks east.
In creating this restaurant, there was much respect for the old fire station.
Engine Company No. 3/Facebook Sandroni worked hard to keep much of the charm and original material of the firehouse. Original wood is still in contact, as well as a brass fire pole near the staircase. The restaurant was even named after the firehouse!
The food, however, is all Sandroni.
