General stores used to be a staple in every town across North Dakota. They had everything you could think of on their shelves. Even if they were missing something, you could ask the store owner to order it in for you and they’d happily oblige. General stores are a thing of the past these days, unless you’re thinking of a certain gas station chain, but there are some historic stores still standing out there and you can even visit them. Take a nostalgic trip to the past at this store located in one of the most unique towns in the Peace Garden State:

This historic spot is located in Jud, North Dakota, a tiny town like no other.

Jimmy Emerson/Flickr Jud only has 72 residents and is located in LaMoure County. It was founded in 1904 and has never had much more than 200 residents.

The town is know as “the city of murals,” and you can see why.

Andrew Filer/Flickr Nearly every building in Jud has been painted to beautiful scenes. From the lovely post office stamp painting to these scenic outdoor paintings, there is a bit of everything to make the town colorful and delightful to see.

But Jud doesn’t just have the murals as its main attraction, right among all the works of art is a historic spot that has survived the times.

That spot is a general store that is still standing, Dagen’s Grocery, constructed in 1905 - a year after the town was founded.

Andrew Filer/Flickr This store is over a century old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been a general store, department store, post office, and hotel in its lifetime. Today, it serves as a museum. There is also a cream station building attached to Dagen’s that is part of the historic place.

The Coca-Cola and 7Up advertisements on the outside will immediately take you back to the past to the good old days.

Andrew Filer/Flickr Dagen’s Grocery is a charming little store in an equally as delightful town, and that’s what makes it so special and nostalgic.

This general store is located on Central Avenue in Jud, North Dakota 58454. The entire town is a fun place to take a quick trip through to see the murals and the store, and is definitely unlike any other place in the world.
