William Shakespeare said, “And though she be but little, she is fierce,” which is often thought to refer to his iconic “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” but do you want to know what I think? I think he penned it in reference to one of the shortest, albeit most twisted and most dangerous roads in America, which just so happens to be right here in Colorado:

Named one of the “21 Roads You Have to Drive in Your Lifetime” by Twisted Sifter is the iconic Million Dollar Highway; a 25-mile stretch of U.S. Route 55 that is as beautiful as it is dangerous.

Nicknamed the Million Dollar Highway by locals (as you would have to pay them $1M to drive it during or after a snowstorm), the road has claimed several lives over the years due to not only its sharp twists and turns, but also its steep and unprotected cliffs.

While the road — which was constructed in the late 1800s as a way to connect Ouray and Ironton — may be dangerous and approached with caution, it also boasts some of the most magnificent views in the state.
