California isn’t unfamiliar with the electrifying natural phenomena of glowing waves, but as of recently this unusual sight as taken over the area of Big Sur and it’s something you won’t want to miss. Bioluminescence specialists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute shared that the glowing waves have most likely been created by a dinoflagellate bloom.
Filled with a recent bloom of bioluminescent phytoplankton, scenic spots like underneath the Bixby Creek Bridge have been incredible to see at night. Drawing in curious onlookers and photographers from all over, these glowing waves along the California coast have increased since the beginning of January.
