Hiking is such a quintessential Montana pastime that it’s natural to feel a little sad when some of our finest trails close down due to winter weather. Luckily, we’ve found some beautiful spots that stay open all year. Granted, that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to reach them when the roads are too treacherous, but should you find yourself with some free time on a beautiful winter day, you’ll be glad they’re there.
- Heart and Pearl Lakes Trail, Superior
Kevin Hager / alltrails.com Located in the Lolo National Forest, this 7.2 mile trail tends to see snow pretty early in the season. But if you’re able to access it, you’ll find that it looks its best in the winter.
- Palisade Falls, Bozeman
Mercedes Santana / alltrails.com This trail makes the perfect winter hike for several reasons. For one, it’s less than 2 miles long, so you’ll have just enough time to get some exercise and take in the views without freezing. It also look amazing covered in snow, and it leads to a beautiful waterfall.
- Summit Trail, Whitefish
Kenneth & Deborah Causey / alltrails.com Strap on your snowshoes, because this 15 mile trail is tough in the wintertime. However, it’s also incredibly beautiful.
- Bozeman Creek Trail
Kevan Skinner / alltrails.com Bozeman Creek Trail is a lengthy trek (about 16 miles in total), but you don’t have to hike the whole thing to experience the beauty.
- Lava Lake Trail, Gallatin Gateway
Kieran Ryan / alltrail.com This is definitely one of those trails that’s gorgeous in any season, but there’s something special about taking the 5 mile trek when it’s dusted with snow.
- Four Dances Trail, Billings
Lee Gannon / alltrails.com Everyone in Billings knows that the Four Dances Recreation Area has the best views. This 2.6 mile loop is incredibly scenic.
- Milwaukee Railroad Trail, Butte
KT McKenna / alltrails.com Enjoy this 2 mile trail anytime of year. Not only does it stay open, but it’s a breeze to complete and super dog-friendly.
- Sioux Charley Lake Trail, Nye
Steele Steele / alltrails.com Sioux Charley Lake Trail is a 6.5 mile hike, but despite its length, it’s a pretty easy path. Expect to see beautiful fall foliage and soft coatings of snow this time of year.
Montana hiking trails are so incredibly beautiful. We happen to think these five hikes should be on everyone’s bucket list.
