Just a short 15 minute drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Denver, you will find a unique farm that is home to some very happy animals. Broken Shovels Farm is a sanctuary for farm animals that are homeless, abused, neglected, or slaughter bound. This tiny farm is an oasis that provides a place of protection and comfort for the animals, and education and enjoyment for visitors.

Broken Shovels Farm can be found at 8640 Dahlia St., in Commerce City, CO 80640.

The farm began about seven years ago after the owner, a 20 year vegetarian, underwent an internship in the dairy industry.

Although the dairy portion of the farm is no longer in operation, Broken Shovels now focuses primarily on being a sanctuary for farm animals who need a helping hand, or animals that have finished their working years and are ready to “retire.”

Broken Shovels Farm welcomes groups of 3-5 year olds for their outdoor education based “Sanctuary School.”
