Nestled in the Kootenai River Valley of northern Idaho is the quaint town of Bonners Ferry. With a population of 2,543, this small town could arguably be considered the “most Idaho” town ever. Here’s why.

Bonners Ferry is simply picturesque, but on top of stunning views it also boasts that friendly small town charm that makes Idaho communities so special. You can really tell that this is the type of community where people value one another.

Established on the banks of the Kootenai River, Bonners Ferry couldn’t be any more beautiful. The town originally came to be during the Gold Rush, when miners flooded into the town in search of gold and silver. After the mining industry dwindled, the town began to focus on lumber and farming.

The downtown area has all the charms of small town living. The old-fashioned main street is filled with unique shops and eateries. Many of the buildings are original from the town’s early days.

However, Bonners Ferry truly embodies “Idaho-ness” due to its close proximity to several recreational opportunities and breathtaking wilderness areas. Nearby is the absolutely incredible Kootenai Wildlife Refuge which is home to hundreds of bird species.

For die hard adventurists, there is an endless amount of wilderness to be explored in this region of Idaho’s panhandle. The nearby Selkirk Mountains boast days of backpacking, hiking, and camping opportunities.

A popular adventure is the trek to Shorty Peak Lookout, about 45 miles from Bonners Ferry. The lookout boasts incredible views of the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains, and offers travelers a unique overnight escape. It doesn’t get more backcountry than this!
