Bon Ton Bakery is in its 101st year of serving the Jefferson community. Located just steps from the Rock River, this charming little bakery began life as an ice cream shop in 1917. The owner’s wife was a prodigious baker and it didn’t take long for the shop to pivot its focus and make baking its primary milieu. Now in it’s fifth generation of family ownership, there are bits of Bon Ton’s history all over the place. From old-world recipes and style to a focus on quality ingredients, there’s stunning detail in everything they do at Bon Ton. A true family business, this little spot has a full century’s worth of experience. While other small town businesses have come and gone, Bon Ton has remained a steadfast part of life in Jefferson.

These days, the bakery has the standard cakes, cookies, breads and cupcakes you’d expect to find at any good bakery, but it’s also a small deli and contains a full catering business. This diversification is part of what’s helped Bon Ton stay successful for so long.

Not much has changed at Bon Ton over the years. This picture from nearly 50 years ago shows the building is mostly unchanged.

The same focus on great ingredients and attention to detail that got the bakery through many different turbulent times is what serves them well today.

These stunning, piped cookies have had me staring in awe for ages. This kind of decorating is difficult and tedious. It requires a steady hand, tons of creativity and the patience of a Saint.

Yet Bon Ton is constantly churning out cookies, cupcakes and cakes with this kind of frankly amazing piping work.

From simple cakes for your daily special events …

… to much more elaborate set ups for things like the local Harry Potter festival, Bon Ton creates some of the most stunning hand-drawn cakes I’ve ever seen. While lots of places have use automated techniques to “achieve perfection,” Bon Ton is continuing to perfect these hand techniques so that they’re flawless. The cakes are stunning, personal and not so perfect that you can’t tell home much love and attention was put in to them.
