The best sandwich in Idaho was named recently and it belongs to this little known restaurant in Boise. Few people are actually aware that Basque culture is huge in Boise. In fact, an entire block of downtown Boise is dubbed “the Basque Block” and is comprised of a museum, a Basque market, and authentic Basque eateries. Bar Gernika is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that sits on the corner of the Basque Block, and it is now home to Idaho’s best sandwich. You absolutely have to visit this place if you haven’t already.

Bar Gernika resides in the heart of downtown Boise, although you may just walk right past it without knowing. The restaurant has been serving up delicious Basque-inspired food since 1991.

This small eatery is one of Idaho’s most amazing hidden gems. It’s popular among locals, but is still relatively unknown by many. The interior is tiny and resembles a small pub, not a restaurant. Don’t be fooled. The food is not to be missed.

“The Spicy Lamb Grinder” is the sandwich that was named Idaho’s best by Food Network. This Basque specialty consists of roasted lamb, grilled onions, peppers, jalapenos, and cheese. It’s one of Bar Gernika’s most popular dishes for good reason.

All of their sandwiches are relatively basic, but the flavors are totally on point. The “Solomo Sandwich” is marinated pork loin with pimientos. The beauty is in their simplicity.

Under no circumstances should you leave without trying some of these. These delicious little fried balls, called Croquetas, will have you addicted from the first bite. Made from butter, onion, and chicken, you’ll find yourself consuming mass quantities of these things.

Most importantly, they always have a tasty rotating beer selection. Nothing pairs better with their wonderful sandwiches than a cold pint of whatever beer they have on tap.

Bar Gernika is a far underappreciated spot in Idaho’s culinary scene so it’s pretty amazing to see them getting some national recognition. The service is friendly and the food is deliciously authentic. Be sure to plan a visit and get a taste of Idaho’s best sandwiches.
