Bad news for anyone who doesn’t travel light: U.S. airlines will no longer be required to reveal baggage fees upfront.
The Trump administration has announced the reversal of an Obama-era rule that required airlines and ticketing agencies be transparent about baggage fees. This means that from now on, you may not learn you will be charged a baggage fee until you input your credit card information online – or you arrive at the airport for your flight.

Under this new system, the actual price of your ticket could be $60 or even $100 more than what is displayed upfront on a flight search tool or on an airline’s website. In some cases, you may not even be told you owe the airline an extra $100 until you check in at the airport.

The Trump Administration says that the prior transparency rules have “limited public benefit.”
Under this shift in policy, the Department of Transportation is also reversing a proposal that would force airlines to reveal how much money they make from “extras” like checking a bag, selecting a roomier seat or priority boarding options.
With more and more airlines charging top dollar for a single checked bag, this is not welcome news for many travelers. If you’re looking to get more mileage out of your suitcase, here are the top nine things you definitely don’t need to pack.
