Not far off from Highway 31 in Wayne County, there’s an eerie attraction that’s offering quite a few different events over the next upcoming Halloween weeks. Almost exactly in between Auburn and Rochester, the Museum of Wayne County History was once the Wayne County Jail and Sheriff’s Residence.
Google Maps During the years of 1856 and 1960, the building operated as the Wayne County Jail. The jail was made up for 24 cells, with the historic building having it’s fair share of history involving violence and death.
The museum today showcases things like the weapons of criminals that were once kept here, depicting the violent crimes and history behind the unsettling items.

Not only did the Sheriff’s family itself have it’s own history of hard times and death, some inmates never would make it out of this jail alive either.
One famous item that you can find on display at the museum today is that of Rose Alloco. Reportedly the Italian immigrant moved to Wayne County in the 1900s and eventually murdered her daughter’s father-in-law after finding out that he had been molesting her. Alloco stabbed the man until he existed no more, resulting in her arrest in 1931 where she would be held in Wayne County Jail. While Alloco was quite quickly convicted and sentenced to 13 years at Auburn Correctional, her knife remains to this day at what was once the Wayne Count Jail.
One of the most famous ghosts that you’ll hear locals talk about though is the only person to ever be hanged in Wayne County Jail, William Fee.

While Fee would always claim his innocence, he was was found guilty and sentenced to hang. Because of how upsetting the death of a young woman was on the area, roughly 2,000 people showed up to the jail for his execution. Today, Fee is one of the most talked about spirits of the jail.
