Chances are you’ve heard the news that the East Coast is gearing up for what could be the coldest New Years to date. Here in Virginia, we know a thing or two about freezing temperatures, which seemed to have arrived just in time for the holidays this year. It brings to mind all of the other remarkable blizzards, plummeting temperatures, and freezing rain that never fail to surprise us. Here are just a few of the things no one tells you about surviving a Virginia winter:
- It’s surprisingly beautiful.
Tony Brooks/flickr Winter is without a doubt the most underrated season in Virginia. Sure, we have a lot to brag about when it comes to fall, but winter often yields breathtaking views that are typically hidden by so many trees.
- Expect the unexpected.
drumz63/flickr We don’t throw around the term “snowpocalypse” lightly. Without much warning, a major snowstorm can hit and you won’t be complaining about not seeing much snow in Virginia.
- Groceries tend to disappear when you need them the most.
Joel Mark Witt/flickr Since everyone does their best to prepare for a snowstorm, chances are the grocery shelves will start to look like a battle field.
- It always feels about 10 degrees colder than it actually is.
Will Fisher/flickr Sure, the thermometer may read 32 degrees, but it will definitely feel more like 20. And when you factor in the wind chill, you may think you’ve landed in the arctic.
- There is still plenty to do outside.
Virginia State Parks/flickr If you don’t mind braving the cold, you’ll find that those beloved outdoor activities are every bit as delightful during the winter.
- You might even experience a few warm days…
Bill Dickinson/flickr The weather’s not all bad in winter. Sometimes, temperatures can rise above 60 and you’ll feel like spring is just around the corner.
- …but don’t get too used to it!
LAmeetsDC/flickr Then again, winter in Virginia is nothing if not unpredictable.
- Bonfires are the key to staying warm.
Will Fisher/flickr If you love being outside, why not throw together a bonfire to get everyone together? Just be sure to exercise the utmost caution.
- ALWAYS pack an extra coat. No matter where you go.
Ian_Henderson/flickr Truth be told, you’ll never regret packing that extra warm layer whenever you leave your house.
