Brace yourselves, Buffalo.. winter is coming… and according to almanacs, it’s coming with a vengeance! To prepare for the unavoidable start of cold weather, we’ve put together a little survival kit of sorts. Here are 9 things Buffalonians have in the trunk of their car at all times (and if you don’t, we highly suggest rounding these items up – just in case!)

  1. An ice scraper.

Kārlis Dambrāns - Flickr Buffalonians keep ice scrapers in our trunk year-round. You just never know when you’ll need it!

  1. Windshield wiper fluid.

Ben Hausmann - Flickr Especially the antifreeze variety.

  1. Hats and gloves.

Colin Harris  ADE - Flickr This is just obvious… if you have to get out to scrape the windshield, you don’t want your fingers to freeze!

  1. Bottled water.

Myrtle Beach TheDigitel - Flickr Another must-have if you ever end up stranded during a storm. Buffalonians keep in their trunk almost year round.

  1. Blankets.

amslerPIX - Flickr Buffalonians keep blankets in their trunk for every situation. Picnic in the summer? We’re prepared. Watching a sports game last minute? Got it covered. Stuck in three feet of snow with no end in sight? Snuggle in!

  1. Snacks!

Bison Dip - Facebook The snacks you choose are totally up to you, but we recommend keeping some grab and go goodies in your trunk that won’t go bad. (Side note: Bison Dip might not be the best choice, but we guarantee you’d want it if you were stuck in winter weather!)

  1. Winter boots.

Mark Bonica - Flickr Most people don’t have a need to wear their boots to work or school, but it’s always a good idea for Buffalonians to keep these in their trunk, just in case the weather takes a turn for the worst.

  1. An extra coat and clothes.

boubou1 - Flickr Don’t bank on the weather being consistent during a Western New York winter! It could be 60 degrees in the morning and drop a foot of snow during the evening commute. Prepare for the elements like a true Buffalonian by always keeping a warm winter coat handy!

  1. Jumper cables.

zoovroo - Flickr Expect the worst and hope for the best, right? We never want our cars to break down while we’re driving - especially during the winter, but sometimes batteries just can’t handle the cold in Buffalo, so it’s best to be prepared!

And if we’re being honest…

bankbryan - Flickr …because, Buffalo.

What are your winter essentials in Western New York? If there are things you keep in your trunk that you think everyone should have, share your survival knowledge in the comments!
