Boardwalk trails are a wonderful way to get out and explore our state’s amazing scenery. They allow you access to parts of the swamps/bayous that you normally wouldn’t be able to get to, giving you glimpses of beautiful cypress/tupelo forests, native plants, and tons of wildlife. Here are some of our favorite boardwalk trails perfect for an afternoon stroll.
- Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

- Chicot State Park

There’s a 20-mile hiking/biking trail that completely encircles Lake Chicot and offers beautiful views of the park’s natural landscape. Find it at 3469 Chicot Park Road, Ville Platte, LA 70586.
- Lake Martin
UpWrite/Trip Advisor One of the largest bird rookeries in the country, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see some wildlife on your visit to Lake Martin. If you can, stay out until dusk because the sunsets over Lake Martin are magical. You’ll find it at 1209 Rookery Road, Breaux Bridge, LA 70517.
- Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge

- Tickfaw State Park
Tickfaw State Park/Facebook There’s more than a mile of beautiful boardwalks to explore over at Tickfaw State Park, and you’ll love the views. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the cypress/tupelo swamp, mixed pine forests, and of course, the Tickfaw River. Check it out at 27225 Patterson Rd, Springfield, Louisiana 70462.
- Barataria Preserve, Jean Lafitte National Park

- Louisiana State Arboretum Trail
Louisiana State Arboretum/Facebook With 600 acres of forest and 5.5 miles of trails, you’ll love exploring the Louisiana State Arboretum Trail. While not all of the trails are boardwalk trails, you’re bound to have a memorable experience. Located at 1300 Sudie Lawton Lane, Ville Platte, LA 70586.
- Black Bayou Lake NWF
Hola624/Trip Advisor This massive 5300-acre refuge is filled with wildlife, everything from migratory species to the typical resident wildlife calls this area home. Come walk the boardwalk trails through the cypress swamps and around the 1600 acre lake. You can find it at 480 Richland Place Dr, Monroe, Louisiana 71203
- Sabine Wetland Walkway
Louisiana Travel/Flickr This 1.5-mile boardwalk trail is located in the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. The trail also featured a raised observation tower that allows for some pretty amazing views of the marsh. Expect to see tons of wildlife, as everything from alligators to butterflies are known to call the area home. Located at 3000 Holly Beach Hwy, Hackberry, LA 70645.
