Cleveland is a spectacular city worthy of celebration. We have a rich history leading into a bright future, and our good fortune is all thanks to the amazing people that call this region home. Why should Clevelanders be proud of their city? The real question is this: why wouldn’t we be proud?
- There is no other place quite like Cleveland.
Erik Drost/Flickr Cleveland is quirky in the best possible way. Our city is amazingly unique and, most importantly, it’s home.
- There is a lot of heart in the city of Cleveland.
Presbyterian Historical Society/Wikimedia Commons You may be wondering how this vintage postcard relates to heart. The story goes that during the Civil War, a Clevelander named Joseph William Briggs was heartbroken to see women facing the cold of winter to trek to a post office to see if a husband or son in service had written. He was so moved that he began delivering mail directly to their homes. Soon, the entire city of Cleveland began home mail delivery, and eventually the practice was adopted by Congress. That is true heart.
- Clevelanders are a united people.
Michelle/Flickr The inhabitants of Cleveland have been known to come together for many an occasion, as we all share an indescribable bond. Compared to most large cities, there is a charming friendliness here that endures always… unless you’re caught wearing a Steelers shirt in our territory.
- Cleveland is the birthplace of some super personalities.
Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster/Wikimedia Commons Just think of all the greats that claim Cleveland as their hometown: Margaret Brainard Hamilton (The Wicked Witch of The West), Eric Singer (Kiss drummer), and Bill Watterson (creator of Calvin and Hobbes) all started their lives in Cleveland. Some remarkable fictional characters found their start here, too. Just ask Superman.
- Cleveland has put an incredible amount of energy into historic preservation.
Erik Drost/Flickr Old architectural gems, museums, and artifacts preserve the story of us, and the cityscape is a stunning blend of old and new.
- Cleveland has a long (and particularly epic) history.
James St. John/Flickr In ancient times, when the region was underwater, Cleveland took on the arduous task of fossilizing its former residents. Joking and unnecessary personification aside, the Cleveland area is actually famous in the paleontological community for the exquisitely preserved fossils hiding in our shale deposits. Sharks, like the Cladoselache fyleri (pictured here) are produced in remarkable quantity from the Cleveland area.
- There is so much to do in Cleveland.
Michelle/Flickr Cleveland is full of amazing things to do, and it seems that everywhere you turn, there is another adventure waiting to happen. These activities create a tighter-knit, more sociable community.
- Cleveland is a community of artists and dreamers.
MissLizy1223/Wikipedia We have an inspired population in Cleveland that is beautifying the city more and more each year. Street art and sculptures can be found in abundance across the region, offering visual interest wherever you go.
- Cleveland is overflowing with natural beauty.
Jen Goellnitz/Flickr Thanks to the hard work of the Cleveland Metroparks, thousands of acres of natural space have been set aside for the community to enjoy. Hiking opportunities abound in this diverse collection of public parks and nature preserves.
Cleveland is a city overflowing with pride, and its residents have every right to celebrate it so enthusiastically. Cleveland is a pretty special place, and we really don’t mind bragging about it every once in awhile.
